Judo is a martial art. During normal practice participants can use throws, restraining techniques, strangles and armlocks. Techniques involving leg-locks, atemi and weapons are retained in kata training for experienced judoka. The knowledge of katsu is retained, although it's use has largely disappeared with the growth of recognised first aid awards.
Compared to many other activities, judo requires very little equipment to train. To get started, beginners only need loose clothing (preferably with long sleeves), and a desire to learn something new. The first thing anyone will learn is how to fall safely, before learning how to use throws and hold-downs to defeat an opponent.
You don't need to be an athlete to practice judo, and 'more mature' people wishing to take up judo may do so if they are in good health.
